Stainless steel Speedmaster manual winding chronograph wristwatch ref. 2998-1 manufactured by Omega.

Brown changed color dial with applied luminous hour markers, applied Omega logo, outer printed minutes track with fifth of a second divisions, subsidiary dials for constant seconds, minutes and hours register, luminous alpha hands, lollipop chronograph hand.

Water resistant stainless steel straight lugs case, pump pushers, signed crown, signed screw back, bezel, faded blueish aluminium inlay, leather strap.

HISTORY IN BRIEF

Tropical dial is a term which is often used by collectors of vintage watches.

A dial can be nicknamed tropical when over the years the black paint has gradually changed color to brown.

A very unusual occurance that makes a vintage watch even more exclusive and sought after.

The brown color gives a warm touch to the watch, making it more attractive and fascinating to eyes of the collector.

It is not yet 100% clear how this rare phenomenon occurs but it is widely believed that it is a mix between a defect in the original paint and the action of external climatic factors such as light, heat, humidity which over time accelerate the color changing process.

The present 2998-1 Speedmaster specimen produced in the late 50’s is a perfect example of how the passage of time can not only not diminish the charm and value of a watch, but even increase it.

We are very excited to offer for sale this early 2998-1 Speedmaster as it can be considered one of the best examples recently appeared on the public market.

The present 2998-1 amazes for its overall state of preservation, especially if we consider that the watch was produced in the late 50’s.

The applied Omega logo dial during the years gradually changed color to an awesome brown color.

Rarity and beauty of the dial cannot be stressed enough in a few words.

We can only say that by evaluating the dial as a whole, that is, the quality of conservation and the degree of color change it can be said that it almost reaches perfection.

The case, most likely untouched, still showing crisp angles and edges.

Caseback and movement serial number perfectly matches the production period of the watch.

All other components including base 1000 bezel, crown, hand set and pushers are also correct for the year of manufacture.

The rarity of the present timepiece is further enhanced by the Omega Extract from the Archives which reveals a military provenance confirming the delivery of this 2998-1 to the Us Marine Corps.

With an all over matching patina, a fantastic tropical dial, military provenance, virtually untouched conditions the present 2998-1 is a perfect timepiece for the savvy collector looking for an exclusive wristwatch to add to an important vintage watches collection.
